Our Story: The History of The Diener School

Established in 2007 | Founder: Jillian Copeland

The Diener School began with a personal mission: founder Jillian Copeland’s search for a nurturing, challenging, and supportive learning environment for her own son with unique learning needs. After an exhaustive search across the Washington, D.C. area, Jillian realized there were no schools that truly balanced strong academics with the social, emotional, and developmental support children like her son required to thrive.

Driven by a passion for inclusion and backed by a strong educational background and expertise in special education, Jillian explored national best practices, reviewed current and past research, and collaborated with educational and developmental experts. The result was the creation of the “Diener Pyramid of Learning for the Whole Child,” a comprehensive framework that became the foundation of The Diener School’s philosophy and programming.

What began as a vision has grown into something even more extraordinary than Jillian could have imagined. Today, 19 years after its founding, The Diener School is proud to call our beautiful new campus our permanent home. With a dedicated staff of 45 and 93 students enrolled and thriving, Diener continues to meet each learner where they are—nurturing their strengths, fostering independence, and empowering them to become confident, curious, and critical thinkers for life.
